TheChevroletCamaroisanAmericanautomobilemanufacturedbyChevrolet,classifiedasaponycarandsomeversionsalsoasamusclecar.ItwentonsaleonSeptember29,1966,forthe1967modelyearandwasdesignedasacompetingmodeltotheFordMustang.ThecarshareditsplatformandmajorcomponentswiththePontiacFirebird,alsointroducedfor1967.
FourdistinctgenerationsoftheCamaroweredevelopedbeforeproductionendedin2002.Thenameplatewasrevivedonaconceptcarthatevolvedintothefifth-generationCamaro;productionstartedonMarch16,2009.
Beforeanyofficialannouncement,reportsbeganrunningduringApril1965withintheautomotivepressthatChevroletwaspreparingacompetitortotheFordMustang,code-namedPanther.OnJune21,1966,around200automotivejournalistsreceivedatelegramfromGeneralMotorsstating,"...pleasesavenoonofJune28forimportantSEPAWmeeting.Hopeyoucanbeonhandtohelpscratchacat.Detailswillfollow...(signed)JohnL.Cutter–Chevroletpublicrelations–SEPAWsecretary."Thefollowingday,thesamejournalistsreceivedanotherGeneralMotorstelegramstating,"SocietyfortheEradicationofPanthersfromtheAutomotiveWorldwillholdfirstandlastmeetingonJune28...(signed)JohnL.Cutter–ChevroletpublicrelationsSEPAWsecretary."Thesetelegramspuzzledtheautomotivejournalists.
OnJune28,1966,GeneralMotorsheldalivepressconferenceinDetroit’sStatler-HiltonHotel.Itwasthefirsttimethat14citieswereconnectedinrealtimeforapressconferenceviatelephonelines.ChevroletgeneralmanagerPeteEstesstartedthenewsconferencestatingthatallattendeesoftheconferencewerechartermembersoftheSocietyfortheEliminationofPanthersfromtheAutomotiveWorldandthatthiswouldbethefirstandlastmeetingofSEPAW.Estesthenannouncedanewcarline,projectdesignationXP-836,withanamethatChevroletchoseinkeepingwithothercarnamesbeginningwiththeletterCsuchastheCorvair,Chevelle,ChevyII,andCorvette.Heclaimedthename,suggeststhecomradeshipofgoodfriendsasapersonalcarshouldbetoitsownerandthattous,thenamemeansjustwhatwethinkthecarwilldo...go.TheCamaronamewasthenunveiled.AutomotivepressaskedChevroletproductmanagers,whatisaCamaro?andweretolditwasasmall,viciousanimalthateatsMustangs.
AccordingtothebookTheCompleteBookofCamaro:EveryModelSince1967,thenameCamarowasconceivedbyChevroletmerchandisingmanagerBobLundandGeneralMotorsvicepresidentEdRollett,whiletheywerereadingthebookHeath'sFrenchandEnglishDictionarybyJamesBoïelleandbydeV.Payen-Payneprintedin1936.InthebookTheCompleteBookofCamaro,itstatesthatMr.LundandMr.RollettfoundthewordcamarointheFrench-Englishdictionarywasslang,tomeanfriend,pal,orcomrade.ThearticlefurtherrepeatedEstes'sstatementofwhatthewordcamarowasmeanttoimply,thatthecar'sname"suggeststhecomradeshipofgoodfriends,asapersonalcarshouldbetoitsowner".Infact,theactualFrenchwordthathasthatmeaningis"camarade",fromwhichtheEnglishword"comrade"isderived,[9]andnot"camaro";"camaro"isnotarecognizedwordintheFrenchlanguage.
